More qld searchers go to quake zone at a much lower cost.

The cost to put a QLD searcher on your truck and vehicle is about $350 (US) per person, per day (or about $200 to transport your person to the site). It is possible to send searchers and their families on an extended, 2-week trek to the site at very little cost, and many people do.

The QLD searcher project can also be a good way to have fun and learn about earthquakes in your area.

Some of the searchers' families, or even friends, will be there with them to document the adventure. Others may want to take photos, videos or video of themselves to be taken with the family or friends.

The searchers can go the site in pairs (so the child can go first), and they will share the experience with them as they go. They can even sleep with their parents or grandparents, or even with friends that share the same house as the site!

Who can participate?

There are 3 eligibility requirements to participate in the QLD searcher project:

A resident of QLD

A qualified QLD seismic engineer

An adequate family of 3 or more persons

QLD searchers must be residents of Queensland or have a resident licence issued by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AIMM)

Qualified QLD seismic engineers can be from a variety of disciplines including engineering, geology, earth science or geophysics. There are currently 12 Queensland Qualified QLD seismic engineers on the WA earthquake site search team. Each can do the following work:

Work a seismograph or seismic instrument (such as a seismometer) with a high-definition camera or a seismograph that can record a high-quality photograph of the site, which shows the ground, structure and fault

Search the site with a specially developed drill with a low ground-level motor (called a sub-motor) and have a GPS (Global Positioning System) locator installed

Conduct remote testing of the equipment at the site to check for faults, faults that have not been detected and seismic events associated with earthquakes (and related events in the earth's mantle)

Inspect all locations of the site with a specialized inspection tool

Do not work with other staff

The QLD site search team consists of experienced staff, including an expert in Earthquake Hazards (a group of seismic engineers that includes geophysicists, geologists, engineers, lawyers and engineers as well as geophysicists); a specialist in earthquake risk management in Queensland; and a specialist in faulting and the design and maintenance of seep faults.

Nkunda threatens war over talks deadlock

A senior government official told Al Jazeera that talks between Pakistan's parliamentarians and senior military commanders in Islamabad about a proposed plan to hold talks broke down after a "deadlock" in which leaders refused to talk to each other.

The meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari, the speaker of parliament Anwar ul Haq, and military commanders was supposed to take place at 6pm on Tuesday.

Zardari, who was invited to attend by his deputy Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, told his ministers during a meeting on Monday that it was still being planned and had not been finalised.

He said: "A meeting between the government and the opposition representatives and representatives of the party congress and members of armed forces - the most senior political parties of the country - was called to discuss the proposals made by the National Reconciliation Conference.

"The meeting was never announced, it had not been resolved."

Taliban attacks

Pakistan military command chief Maj Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa confirmed the delay during a news conference from Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

"I cannot confirm this. (There were) discussions held between the prime minister and the military command chief on Monday, some days back. And if we cannot finalise it, then it's our own decision whether we will go ahead or not," he added.

The opposition has warned of renewed fighting against the security forces after the army confirmed its commander killed six civilians and five soldiers in heavy firefights with militants in the eastern province of Khyber Agency late on Friday.

Bajwa said military operations will continue despite reports of an "imminent attack" by Taliban fighters in the province.

"Our troops and military units have the right to carry out any offensive operation against the Taliban," he said.

Pakistani Taliban's new media wing claims to have killed 12 troops in military operations

Facing off with a Taliban faction blamed for high-profile attacks in recent months in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan's north, the army and the air force have increasingly been engaging militants in their bid to drive them out of Afghanistan.

The army on Friday launched a sweeping ground operation to try to take control of the southern Pakistani city of Multan from the militants who have been launching suicide attacks.

Fighting continued overnight as both military and security forces battled between the militants and civilians in the southern city of Rawalpindi.

In a separate development, the country's army chief on Tuesday said army commanders had "not discussed the planned talks" with opposition MPs after a deadline of 1 pm had passed to end the deadlock.
